Compression Man

An indie comedy animatic for Lachlan Smith’s Compression Man, built around big poses, rapid-fire reactions, and the kind of visual chaos that makes a ridiculous joke land even harder.

About the project

A superhero story with absolutely no interest in behaving like one.

Compression Man is an indie comedy project built around a deliberately larger-than-life hero and a world that can jump from straight-faced superhero imagery to pure cartoon absurdity in a heartbeat. Our job was to make that rhythm readable: sell the setup, make the action clear, then leave just enough room for the joke to hit.

A little more context

Comedy lives in the timing.

Lachlan’s writing has a great instinct for setting up a perfectly reasonable beat, then pulling the floor out from underneath it. That meant the boards couldn’t just explain what was happening. They had to perform the joke.

We leaned into strong silhouettes, exaggerated poses, reaction shots, and quick changes in scale to keep the comedy alive from frame to frame. The trick was knowing when to push a pose, when to hold it, and when to get out of the way and let the writing do the heavy lifting.

End of project

That’s Compression Man.
