Mushroom One

Mushroom One is HENGE's wonderfully unhinged origin story, presented as a psychedelic journey through the band's imagined cosmic history. For the music video, Terrarium Tale handled illustration and art direction, helping build a visual world that could jump between space opera, strange creatures, alien mythology, and the gloriously odd visual language HENGE is known for.

About the project

Big cosmic ideas need a lot of strange little drawings.

The video, officially titled The Illustrated History of Mushroom One, brings together artists from around the world and mixes illustration, live action, animation, and media synthesis. Our part was to develop illustrations and visual direction that could survive that wonderfully chaotic mixture while still feeling like pieces of the same universe.

A little more context

Draw weird. Make it work. Repeat.

Mushroom One was the kind of brief where 'more normal' was never the answer. The imagery moves from spacecraft and alien landscapes to bizarre characters and psychedelic forms, so the challenge was keeping each illustration distinctive without losing the larger visual identity.

The final film combines artwork from a large international group of illustrators and brings those drawings into motion using a hybrid production approach. Seeing our illustrations become part of that constantly shifting visual universe was one of the most fun parts of the project.

End of project

That’s Mushroom One.
